For the last few days I have had some of the 1980s material from the late-great Marvin Gaye on my mind; thought it was time to pick one.
This track was actually originally recorded in 1972, but was not released until after his death. There are two versions of it with the one from this album being reworked in an '80s electronic synth/funk sound in line with current sounds of the time. This one is a standard from during the height of The War, originally written by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer. From wot I understand the title and main idea of the song was borrowed from a sermon by a popular preacher at the time, Father Divine , which translated very well into an upbeat song. From: Automatic for the People ; Year: 1992; Genre: Alternative Rock Gosh, this one really rattles some memories loose for me, not only was it from my pivotal early teenage years, but it was also quite the piece of music and quite popular; rightly so. They might've been one of the preeminent alternative rock bands, but their influences really came through on this one.
