Been really busy this weekend, which included being on the road a bunch, and thus I had a lot of time to listen to some music. Not too surprising that I had some of Zakk Wylde's music come on, which got me to choose another one of his songs.
Anyway, whilst this entire record is filled with some very emotional songs, this track in particular stands out. Zakk Wylde wrote it concerning the passing of Shannon Hoon, who was the lead singer of the band Blind Melon and a friend of his. This one is a standard from during the height of The War, originally written by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer. From wot I understand the title and main idea of the song was borrowed from a sermon by a popular preacher at the time, Father Divine , which translated very well into an upbeat song. Anyway, I have had this concept record by Paul Kantner and company on my mind off and on over the last bit and decided now would be a good time to choose another track from it. This is the "grand finale" of the "space opera" concept, which features a big group of who's who from the folk rock scene at the time contributing on this track and a few others. Starship features the lead guitar of the late-great Jerry Garcia, although you really wouldn't need to be told that because it is so obvious his sound and style.
