5572. Funkadelic - Super Stupid

Image
From: Maggot Brain ; Year: 1971; Genre: Funk/Psychedelic Rock/Heavy Metal I constantly just keep coming back to this record and am blown away at every song I hear; before when I did not pay as much attention to it had I realized just how important Maggot Brain is as an album. Anyway, this track could be best described as Eddie Hazel putting on a guitar clinic whilst also adding lead vocals. Very much a mashup of riff-based metal, unbridled funk, and psychedelic soul to name just a few genres Super Stupid is comprised of; one definitely to enjoy headbanging to.   Hear Super Stupid on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Brave Belt - Crazy Arms, Crazy Eyes   My song pick 2 years ago today: Queen - Ming's Theme (In the Court of Ming the Merciless)   My song pick 3 years ago today: ABBA - Lay All Your Love On Me   My song pick 4 years ago today: Thin Lizzy - Cowboy Song My song pick 5 years ago today: Pallas - Ratracing My song pick 6 yea...

5571. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - 1983... (A Merman I Should Turn To Be)

Image
From: Electric Ladyland ; Year: 1968; Genre: Psychedelic Rock It's quite sad and downright criminal how difficult it has been made to find the art of such a musical trailblazer with such a short and brilliant career legally online, but hopefully once the talentless freeloader(s) who(m) control his catalogue die and are long forgotten dust, Jimi Hendrix's music will endure. Anyway, sorry for the rant, but I just get annoyed by this a lot. Like the majority of his work, this is definitely an interesting piece of music across the board with sound and ideas never heard prior, however heavily used ever since.   Hear a demo of the song on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Toad The Wet Sprocket - Something's Always Wrong   My song pick 2 years ago today: Uriah Heep - Love or Nothing   My song pick 3 years ago today: Waylander - Twin Fires of Beltíne   My song pick 4 years ago today: Rush - Tai Shan My song pick 5 years ago today: Jaco Pastoriu...

5570. Zebrahead - Playmate of the Year

Image
From: Playmate of the Year ; Year: 2000; Genre: Punk Rock/Pop This is another one of those instances where a song just kind of dislodged itself from the dark recesses on my brain and started to play in my head. I guess it must be within the last 22 years that I last heard it, but it's an awful fun and catchy track to listen to and I'm glad I got to hear it once again.   Hear Playmate of the Year on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Mideast Vacation   My song pick 2 years ago today: Gin Blossoms - Hey Jealousy   My song pick 3 years ago today: Dream Theater - Falls Into the Light   My song pick 4 years ago today: Quarterflash - Night Shift My song pick 5 years ago today: Mastodon - Hearts Alive My song pick 6 years ago today: The (Detroit) Spinners - It's a Shame My song pick 7 years ago today: Neil Young - This Note's For You My song pick 8 years ago today: Dire Straits - Telegraph Road My song pi...

5569. Earth, Wind & Fire - Jupiter

Image
From: All 'n All ; Year: 1978; Genre: R&B/Funk A super funky track for a Tuesday pick? Sure, why not? All the better too with this excellent mover from Earth, Wind & Fire; nothing better than having something so upbeat and positive as we enter the middle of a workweek.   Hear Jupiter on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Steve Vai - There's Something Dead in Here   My song pick 2 years ago today: Helloween - Future World   My song pick 3 years ago today: Billy Ocean - Nights (Feel Like Gettin' Down)   My song pick 4 years ago today: Ultravox - Lament My song pick 5 years ago today: Hawkwind - Paradox My song pick 6 years ago today: Brave Belt - Summer Soldier My song pick 7 years ago today: John Denver - Let it Be My song pick 8 years ago today: The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations My song pick 9 years ago today: Sly and the Family Stone - I Want to Take You Higher My song pick 10 years ago today: Argent - Tragedy My s...

5568. Explorers Club - Impact 1 – Fate Speaks

Image
From: Age of Impact ; Year: 1998; Genre: Progressive Metal/Symphonic Metal Explorers Club's two albums are among those that I'd heard of and wanted to listen to, but just never go around to it. For me it was similar to my experience with Mike Oldfield's epic Tubular Bells and subsequent releases; as with it, Age of Impact had a very similar reaction when I first played it. I figured wot better place to make my first choice from it, but the opening 16-minute piece that acts not only as a overture, but a long, multifaceted epic that ends being taken to more or less its musical extreme.   Hear Impact 1 – Fate Speaks on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Frank Zappa - No Not Now   My song pick 2 years ago today: Nocturnal Rites - Our Wasted Days   My song pick 3 years ago today: Soundgarden - Room a Thousand Years Wide   My song pick 4 years ago today: Morrissey - First of the Gang to Die My song pick 5 years ago today: Raspberries - I Wa...

5567. Willie Nelson & Ray Price - Crazy Arms

Image
From: San Antonio Rose ; Year:1980; Genre: Country Swing I've been thinking about Willie Nelson and his music recently. As far as I know I have only chosen something from his only once prior, which was when he was part of the outlaw country supergroup The Highwaymen that also included superstars: Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Chris Kristofferson.  Anyway, this is a re-recording/cover of the hit originally released by Ray Price back in 1956. For me that rhythm section doing that swing rhythm is one of the main draws for me, but by far the largest draw for me is the one and only legend Buddy Emmons doing a simply amazing lead on the pedal steel guitar.   Hear Crazy Arms on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Marvin Gaye - What's Going On   My song pick 2 years ago today: Funkadelic - Some Fresh Delic   My song pick 3 years ago today: Badfinger - Name of the Game   My song pick 4 years ago today: Fleet Foxes - Mykonos My song pick 5 y...

5566. Rare Earth - Smiling Faces Sometimes

Image
From: Ma ; Year: 1973; Genre: Psychedelic Soul Been sick over the last few days, so I've not had a lot of time to listen to any music, however, this album and this Motown cover from Rare Earth just felt good. This track was, of course, first recorded by The Temptations, but made famous by The Undisputed Truth a short time later. Whilst not nearly at the level of the original, I really like wot they did with it in making it distinctively their own sound while keeping the original soul/message of the song intact.   Hear Smiling Faces Sometimes on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Rhythm Machine - Thought My Love Was Fine   My song pick 2 years ago today: Devo - Uncontrollable Urge   My song pick 3 years ago today: Pallas - Nightmare My song pick 4 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Just Trying to Be My song pick 5 years ago today: Pitchshifter - Genius My song pick 6 years ago today: Styx - Born For Adventure My song pick 7 years ago today: Ia...

5565. Parliament - [You're a Fish & I'm a] Water Sign

Image
From: Motor Booty Affair ; Year: 1978; Genre: Soul/R&B/Funk Been in the mood once more for something from George Clinton and company; I was actually meaning to choose one from Parliament's previous record Funkentelechy vs. the Placebo Syndrome , however, apparently I have already picked every song from that album. So, I just went to their next one, which is just as good across the board, and picked this mellower track that served as the B-Side to the insanely legendary song that is Aqua Boogie .   Hear [You're a Fish & I'm a] Water Sign on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Dead or Alive - You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)   My song pick 2 years ago today: Raspberries - Tonight   My song pick 3 years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Quick Change Artist   My song pick 4 years ago today: Spock's Beard - All on a Sunday My song pick 5 years ago today: Van Der Graaf Generator - White Hammer My song pick 6 years ago today...

5564. Boston - Tell Me

Image
From: Greatest Hits ; Year: 1997; Genre: Rock This is one of a few unreleased songs to appear on the band's greatest hits compilation back in 1997. Musically, Tell Me is among Boston's softer songs and doesn't seem to have "that sound" or production quality which the band is known for in my opinion, but still a good track nevertheless.   Hear Tell Me on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Ian Anderson - The Browning of the Green   My song pick 2 years ago today: Steeleye Span - Roadways   My song pick 3 years ago today: Helloween - Pumpkins United     My song pick 4 years ago today: Porcupine Tree - Hatesong My song pick 5 years ago today: Funkadelic - Phunklords My song pick 6 years ago today: Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) - When Time Stood Still My song pick 7 years ago today: Soundgarden - Loud Love My song pick 8 years ago today: Joachim Witt - Das Jüngste Gericht My song pick 9 years ago today: Carmen - The Gypsies ...

5563. The Moody Blues - Question

Image
From: A Question of Balance ; Year: 1970; Genre: Progressive Rock Question was amongst the songs that got me into The Moody Blues back when I was a child; really, they were my "gateway drug" into the genre that is progressive rock/art rock and such. I cannot name an album of theirs that I dislike, especially from the debut through the 1980; those guys really knew how to write, record, and produce great music. Anyway, I've always loved the "sections" within this song that go from energetic acoustic, to hard rock, and to soft ballad and everything in between.   Hear Question on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Les Paul - Goofus   My song pick 2 years ago today: Midnight Oil - Back on the Borderline   My song pick 3 years ago today: Quasar - Fire in the Sky   My song pick 4 years ago today: Curved Air - Elfin Boy My song pick 5 years ago today: Gloryhammer - Goblin King of the Darkstorm Galaxy My song pick 6 years ago today: Russkaja -...

5562. Motörhead - Hellraiser

Image
From: March ör Die ; Year: 1992; Genre: Heavy Metal Here's an interesting song for one reason: it's technically both a cover and original song due to the fact that Ozzy Osbourne, Lemmy, and Zakk Wylde all co-wrote the song. So, even though Ozzy released his version a little less than a year earlier, this version is very much an original recording as well. I've always really liked this track and it's excellent that two of my favourite heavy metal artists collaborated and recorded their own versions of a great song; double the awesomeness!   Hear Hellraiser on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Charlie Daniels Band - Reflections   My song pick 2 years ago today: Pat Benatar - Hit Me With Your Best Shot   My song pick 3 years ago today: Victor Wooten - Keep it Low   My song pick 4 years ago today: Klaatu - Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft My song pick 5 years ago today: Big Country - Fields of Fire (400 Miles) My son...

5561. Lenny Kravitz - Rock And Roll Is Dead

Image
From: Circus ; Year: 1995; Genre: Hard Rock I really love that hard driving riff based rock that is this song with its cheeky title basically being the antithesis to the song itself; quite a funny little joke from Mr. Kravitz there.   Hear Rock And Roll Is Dead on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Marillion - The Space...   My song pick 2 years ago today: Hawkwind - Last Man on Earth   My song pick 3 years ago today: Janis Joplin - Kosmic Blues My song pick 4 years ago today: Van Morrison - Wild Nights My song pick 5 years ago today: Van Halen - Best of Both Worlds My song pick 6 years ago today: Santo & Johnny - Deep Purple My song pick 7 years ago today: Dire Straits - Expresso Love My song pick 8 years ago today: Earth, Wind & Fire - Power My song pick 9 years ago today: Pink Floyd - Astronomy Domine My song pick 10 years ago today: Richard Wagner - Ride of the Valkyries My song pick 11 years ago today: Joachim Witt - ...

5560. Charlie Ryan - Hot Rod Lincoln

Image
From: Hot Rod ; Year: 1961 (1955); Genre: Rockabilly Most who know of this proto rock 'n roll tune would probably remember the cover of the song from 1971 by Commander Cody , but this one here by Charlie Ryan was the original. Interestingly enough, he wrote this song as an answer to a song titled Hot Rod Race by Arkie Shibley, but was apparently somewhat autobiographical concerning the titular car that was based on a street race between Charlie Ryan's own hot rod Lincoln and a friend's Cadillac. This is also among the first songs to kick off the whole hot rod rock 'n roll tune craze that essentially continues to this day.   Hear Hot Rod Lincoln on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Sweeney Todd - Short Distance, Long Journey   My song pick 2 years ago today: Funkadelic - Foot Soldiers (Star Spangled Funky) My song pick 3 years ago today: Asia - Lying to Yourself     My song pick 4 years ago today: Simon & Garfunkel - The ...

5559. Accept - Princess of the Dawn

Image
From: Restless And Wild ; Year: 1982; Genre: Heavy Metal I could've sworn that I had chosen songs from Accept, but I'm truly shocked to discover that I was in error and am well over 5000 songs into this blog and haven't even picked a single one. Well... that's definitely being fixed today; I've always really liked Accept and the music from Udo Dirkschneider, their material from the early-mid 1980s in particular. This is one of my top favourites of the band's albums and this track in particular is one I absolutely like; a perfect song to close out the record.   Hear Princess of the Dawn on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Funkadelic - Shockwaves   My song pick 2 years ago today: Bachman-Turner Overdrive (BTO) - Average Man My song pick 3 years ago today: Reverend Horton Heat - Psychobilly Freakout My song pick 4 years ago today: Fates Warning - Anarchy Divine My song pick 5 years ago today: Michael Jackson - Smooth Criminal My song p...

5558. Primus - Conspiranoia

Image
From: Conspiranoid ; Year: 2022; Genre: Progressive Rock Delving once again into what Les Claypool and the band Primus are up to recently; lo and behold did they ever deliver! At just under 12 minutes long, this is the longest song the group has recorded up to this point. It is filled with some excellent musical arrangements and neat instrumental sections throughout with of course the amazing lyrical mastery, as always, utilized to get a point across.   Hear Conspiranoia on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Depeche Mode - New Life My song pick 2 years ago today: Yes - Time and a Word My song pick 3 years ago today: Jethro Tull - Commercial Traveler My song pick 4 years ago today: Jefferson Starship - No Way Out My song pick 5 years ago today: Cybotron - Parameters of Consciousness My song pick 6 years ago today: The Jimmy Castor Bunch - You Better Be Good (Or the Devil Gon' Getcha) My song pick 7 years ago today: Yes - No Opportunity ...

5557. Foreigner - The Damage Is Done

Image
From: Foreigner ; Year: 1977; Genre: Rock I might be in the minority among Foreigner fans, but without a doubt their self-titled debut album is without a single doubt my favourite from the band. On this track in particular the guitar and bass really drive it once the very computerized keyboard and vocal section concludes.    Hear The Damage Is Done on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Blancmange - Waves   My song pick 2 years ago today: "Weird Al" Yankovic - Bedrock Anthem My song pick 3 years ago today: Jerry Reed - Miller's Cave My song pick 4 years ago today: Ozric Tentacles - Yum Yum Tree My song pick 5 years ago today: Sly and the Family Stone - You Can Make it if You Try My song pick 6 years ago today: Deep Purple - Stormbringer My song pick 7 years ago today: Egg - Fugue in D-Minor My song pick 8 years ago today: Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers - The Last DJ My song pick 9 years ago today: Van Der Graaf Genera...

5556. R.E.O. Speedwagon - Don't Let Him Go

Image
From: Hi Infidelity ; Year: 1980; Genre: Rock For some reason this is one of, if not my favourite album from the band; I heard it a lot when I was a kid. I really like how they use the tried and true "Bo Diddley" structure in the verses which greatly contrasts with the more mainstream rock sound in the chorus to make it a bit of an interesting track.   Hear Don't Let Him Go on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Rush - Hand Over Fist   My song pick 2 years ago today: Wild Turkey - Gentle Rain My song pick 3 years ago today: Eddie Money - Walk on Water My song pick 4 years ago today: Dayton Sidewinders - Go Ahead On My song pick 5 years ago today: Victor Wooten - I Saw God My song pick 6 years ago today: Melvins - A History of Bad Men My song pick 7 years ago today: Wild Turkey - Ballad of Chuck Stallion and the Mustangs My song pick 8 years ago today: Nick Gilder - Here Comes the Night My song pick 9 years ago today: Billy Joel ...

5555. The Jackson 5 - I Want You Back

Image
From: Diana Ross Presents The Jackson 5 ; Year: 1969; Genre: R&B/Soul/Motown Since I'm now at the total of 5555 songs chosen thus far on my blog I decided I should pick one from The Jackson 5. I guess this is a case of another band that should've graced my list prior, but I just never got around to do so until now. Anyway, this is, of course The Jackson 5's debut single that was and still is quite popular, and rightfully so. The quintet of brothers that made up the vocal act really showed their chops and would go on to leave an enormous mark on pop culture since.   Hear I Want You Back on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: The Cure - The 13th   My song pick 2 years ago today: Rush - Carnies My song pick 3 years ago today: Bootsy's Rubber Band - Another Point of View My song pick 4 years ago today: America - Watership Down My song pick 5 years ago today: Hawkwind - Angels of Death My song pick 6 year ago today: Yes - America My...

5554. Lynyrd Skynyrd - You Got That Right

Image
From: Street Survivors ; Year: 1977; Genre: Southern Rock I've had them keep popping on my shuffle playlist quite often as of late, so I thought I'd pick another one of their songs today. If it weren't for the tragedy of the aeroplane crash that took the lives of three band members as well as the suffering of the survivors, this track would be an almost perfect feelgood rocker with that boogie beat and near perfect musicianship. Even with the fact of the crash surrounding it, this is one of their top tracks, which also features guitar virtuoso Steve Gaines singing co-lead with Ronnie Van Zant.   Hear You Got That Right on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Iron Maiden - Running Free   My song pick 2 years ago today: Jon Oliva's Pain - Festival My song pick 3 years ago today: Eddie Money - Baby Hold On My song pick 4 years ago today: Mr. Big - 1992 My song pick 5 years ago today: Fairport Convention - Dirty Linen My song pick 6 years a...

5553. Band of Horses - Lights

Image
From: Things Are Great ; Year: 2022; Genre: Indie Rock Decided to check out Band of Horses' newest album today, and to say the least, it's real nice to hear the band returning to the sound they had back when I first discovered them. Although, from what I understand, the group's lineup has changed since their previous record, but from wot I hear it has not been adverse of their sound.   Hear Lights on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Phil Collins - You Can't Hurry Love   My song pick 2 years ago today: Funkadelic - Connections & Disconnections My song pick 3 years ago today: Rage Against the Machine - Ashes in the Fall My song pick 4 years ago today: The Thermals - Power Doesn't Run on Nothing My song pick 5 years ago today: Sandy Denny - Solo My song pick 6 years ago today: Blondie - Call Me My song pick 7 years ago today: Carl Douglas - Kung Fu Fighting My song pick 8 years ago today: Alice in Chains - No Excuses My song...

5552. John Lee Hooker - Boom Boom

Image
From: Burnin' ; Year: 1962; Genre: Blues Chances are, you've heard Boom Boom at some point in your life, and if not you definitely should; it is one of the top Blues standards of the last 60 years. It's just amazing when you listen to this song how many artists have been influenced by John Lee Hooker and his music across all genres of popular music. And to add to that, not only do you get to hear a legendary bluesman, but he's backed by some of the legends of Motown: the Funk Brothers. So, yeah, this entire album oozes musical expertise through every single sound.   Hear Boom Boom on YouTube.       My song pick 1 year ago today: Parliament - Presence of a Brain   My song pick 2 years ago today: Jethro Tull - The Clasp My song pick 3 years ago today: Stuart Hamm - Quahogs Anyone?
