6164. Mike Pinder - Among the Stars

Last night I learned of the passing of original keyboardist/mellotronist/vocalist... just about any instrumentalist, etc, Mike Pinder. In the last few years a lot of the 'Moody's have been passing; of "the core," I believe, Justin Heyward, John Lodge, and Patrick Moraz are the only surviving members. He played with the Moody Blues from their inception through to their 1978 Octave record and was subsequently replaced by Patrick Moraz.
Anyway, Mike Pinder released a few solo albums, including this one back in the mid 1990s, which this is the title-track. Whilst I absolutely love his material and work with the Moody Blues, Among the Stars I thought would be a very apropos track to mark his passing.

This one is a standard from during the height of The War, originally written by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer. From wot I understand the title and main idea of the song was borrowed from a sermon by a popular preacher at the time, Father Divine , which translated very well into an upbeat song. Anyway, I have had this concept record by Paul Kantner and company on my mind off and on over the last bit and decided now would be a good time to choose another track from it. This is the "grand finale" of the "space opera" concept, which features a big group of who's who from the folk rock scene at the time contributing on this track and a few others. Starship features the lead guitar of the late-great Jerry Garcia, although you really wouldn't need to be told that because it is so obvious his sound and style. Had a couple of other songs in mind for this minor holiday, (that is, if you can call it an actual holiday), but had this one just pop into my head while I was getting ready to pick.
