Been meaning to pick this "opus" off the Close to the Edge album for a bit now. As one of the three songs originally released on the record, even at over ten minutes in length, it is still not the longest. It is a-typical progressive rock from the time in every sense of the definition and is split into four parts: I. Chord of Life, II. Eclipse, III. The Preacher, The Teacher, and IV. This one is a standard from during the height of The War, originally written by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer. From wot I understand the title and main idea of the song was borrowed from a sermon by a popular preacher at the time, Father Divine , which translated very well into an upbeat song. Anyway, I have had this concept record by Paul Kantner and company on my mind off and on over the last bit and decided now would be a good time to choose another track from it. This is the "grand finale" of the "space opera" concept, which features a big group of who's who from the folk rock scene at the time contributing on this track and a few others. Starship features the lead guitar of the late-great Jerry Garcia, although you really wouldn't need to be told that because it is so obvious his sound and style.
