It is rather amazing just how many songs are written about this month and its ending; a lot of emotion around summer's ebbing. It's also amazing to think that tomorrow will mark the 16th anniversary of me starting this song-a-day blog, it is a lot to take in indeed.
Anyway, next month will also mark the 30th anniversary of Counting Crows' debut record of this song's namesake, which for some 26 years existed in only lyrics written on that album's artwork. This one is a standard from during the height of The War, originally written by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer. From wot I understand the title and main idea of the song was borrowed from a sermon by a popular preacher at the time, Father Divine , which translated very well into an upbeat song. Anyway, I have had this concept record by Paul Kantner and company on my mind off and on over the last bit and decided now would be a good time to choose another track from it. This is the "grand finale" of the "space opera" concept, which features a big group of who's who from the folk rock scene at the time contributing on this track and a few others. Starship features the lead guitar of the late-great Jerry Garcia, although you really wouldn't need to be told that because it is so obvious his sound and style.
